When you want the exceptional value of a used pickup at Autos of Texas, you can't go wrong looking closely at the world's two best-selling full-size trucks: The Chevy Silverado 1500 and the Ford F-150. Fortunately, we typically carry both these world-beating pickups so you can compare them in person. To get you started on your shopping trip, here's a brief look at some strengths and key features you'll find in these outstanding pickups.
Comparing recent generations
At Autos of Texas in Carrollton and Tyler, TX, we feature later models of the Chevy Silverado 1500 and the Ford F-150. The kinds of F-150 models we offer will usually start with the 13th Generation that began in 2015 and is still being produced. The 13th Generation of the F-150 introduced an all-aluminum body that dramatically reduced the truck's overall weight. The current Chevy models are considered the 3rd Generation and also started in 2015.
Engine choices
Both the Chevy Silverado 1500 and the Ford F-150 offer you a big variety of engine options to help you align your work priorities and your budget. Both offer gasoline- and diesel-powered choices to buyers from Plano and Jacksonville TX. If you look at a 2015 Ford F-150, for example, the base is a 3.5-liter V6 with 283 horsepower and torque of 255 lb-ft. In a higher trim, it could come with a 5.0-liter V8 with 385 horsepower and 387 lb-ft. of torque.
For comparison, the entry-level 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 would have bigger displacement 4.3-liter V6 with almost identical horsepower to the comparable F-150 at 285 but more torque at 305 lb-ft. If you find a Silverado 1500 with a bigger 6.2-liter V8 engine under the hood, it would be capable of 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. So when you move up to the higher trims looking for more horsepower, the Silverado wins the race.
Performance
Both trucks do very well in terms of towing capacity and giving you your money's worth off-road. Both typically come with rear-wheel drive but you might find a four-wheel drive in either used Ford or Chevy model. Sticking with our 2015 comparison, the two trucks are almost identical in terms of towing. Properly equipped, the used Chevy from 2015 will tow up to 13,400 lb. while the comparable Ford F-150 tows a max of 13,200 lb.
If you intend to take your pickup off-road, presumably a long way from Dallas or Forth Worth TX, look for the right version in either truck. With the Ford F-150, look for one with the FX4 Off-Road Package. If you're shopping for a Chevy Silverado 1500, look for the Z71 Off-Road Package. Both will have more muscular suspension, a hill descent control feature, the under-side protection of skid plates and an electronic rear-locking differential.
Technology
As you would expect, the newer the pickup, the more advanced the tech you'll find on board. Used Ford F-150 models from 2015 forward are considered the 13th generation models and they will usually give you bigger infotainment display screens, along with satellite radio. Chevy Silverado models have similar limits for comparable model years although the Silverado 1500 offered Bluetooth and infotainment screens as far back as 2007.
